There is just one week left to go before the November 4th Local Government Elections.
Over 29 million people are expected to cast their vote next Wednesday, which has also been declared a public holiday.
The LGEs serve to elect leadership for the country’s local municipalities. This means the results of this elections will directly impact daily life, by ensuring basic service delivery and improving community development.
Before next Wednesday, Special Voting will take place on the 2nd and 3rd of November.
Those whose applications were approved will either cast their ballots at home or at designated voting stations.
Are you casting a Special Vote in the LGE2026?
On next week Monday or Tuesday, some citizens will cast their ballots at home or at their voting stations.
The Special Votes are designated for people who are unable to vote on election day, and to cast their vote on a day before election day.
People who qualify are those who cannot travel to their voting station due to:
- physical illness
- are disabled
- or pregnant
- or cannot vote at their voting station on election day
Where does special votes take place
If the special voter cannot physically travel to their voting station, then a voting official will visit their place of residence.
Just like on election day, the ballot must be marked in secret.
Voters who are able to travel – but are unable to vote at their voting stations on election day – will also be accommodated via the Special Voting period and allowed to vote at their registered voting station on either 2 or 3 November.
Once the ballot has been cast
After the Special Vote is cast, the voter’s thumbnail will be marked with indelible ink.
The ballot is placed in an envelope with voter’s name, ID numner and voting district number.
The marked ballot is then placed in a secure ballot box for special votes.
The voter’s name is struck from the Voter’s Roll, and marked with an “SV” to indicate that it is a special vote.
