Two beaches along the Eastern Cape’s coast has been closed after a 65-year-old woman was killed by a shark yesterday.
The attack occurred while the victim was swimming with a group of open-water swimmers at Orient Beach in in KuGompo City (formerly East London).
The attack happened on Tuesday morning.
She sustained severe injuries to her right arm and leg.
Despite efforts by paramedics, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
The Buffalo City municipality announced that Orient Beach and Eastern beach are closed until further notice. Surrounding beaches have also been warned.
“Warnings are also being issued at other beaches, and members of the public are requested to remain vigilant, adhere to all safety advisories, and comply with instructions issued by the relevant authorities.”
