At Huis Nuweland in Claremont, where Day 1 of Special Voting is underway, one resident’s words have captured the spirit of the day.

Ruth Sikel, a resident at the facility, says voting at her age continues the fight for hope for this country.

Sikel was among 45 of the 140 residents at Huis Nuweland who had cast their vote by this afternoon, despite ballot papers arriving an hour and 30 minutes late this morning.

Centre Manager Edwin Barnard confirmed the delay but says proceedings are now running smoothly, with IEC officials on the ground and heightened police visibility from SAPS and Law Enforcement ensuring a safe environment.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis also visited the facility today, engaging with elderly voters who remained adamant and happy to make their mark.
