Twelve million South Africans had cast their ballots by five o’clock this afternoon, as the IEC makes a final push to get voters to the polls ahead of the nine o’clock closing time.

Gauteng recorded the highest number of votes, with three million, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with two point five million.

In the Western Cape, one point five million votes had been cast, while the Eastern Cape recorded one point four million.

Limpopo recorded one point one million votes, followed by Mpumalanga with 854,000, North West with 702,000, the Free State with 588,000, and the Northern Cape with 299,000.

IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo says voting has gone well across the country, despite a few disruptions.

He says anyone who arrives at a voting station before nine tonight will be allowed to vote, even if the process continues beyond closing time.

The IEC says counting will begin once voting closes, with results expected to be declared as soon as they are available.
