The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has registered 5 259 cases for the past financial year.

It says the main drivers continue to be assault and torture, with 3 468 cases registered.

Four hotspot provinces have been identified: the Western Cape with 905 cases, Gauteng with 898 cases, KwaZulu Natal at 722 and the Eastern Cape with 717 cases.

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia tabled the IPID’s 2025/2026 Annual Report in the National Assembly on Wednesday.

Hundreds of cases of GBVF and rape

Of the total cases registered, 332 were cases of Gender Based Violence and Femicide.

116 were acts of rape by a police officer.

In terms of the GBVF, KwaZulu Natal registered the most cases with 60. This was narrowly followed by Gauteng with 58 cases.

  • Madadeni in KwaZulu Natal (6)
  • Phoenix in KwaZulu Natal (5)
  • Humewood in Eastern Cape (5)
  • Welkom in Free State (5)

Regarding the cases of rape by a police officer, IPID says this was an increase compared to the number of cases (95) in 2024/2025.

72 acts of rape were committed by on-duty officers.

Convictions and arrests

IPID Spokesperson, Lizzy Suping says in the year under review, 84 criminal convictions were secured. This was an increase of just under 50% from the previous year which saw 43 convictions.

281 arrests of various crimes were also conducted in the year.
