South African lawyer and judge Navi Pillay has won this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee says she is honoured for promoting peace and international law.
Committee chair Jørgen Frydnes said Pillay had been instrumental in ensuring war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted.
Pillay was born in Durban under apartheid, into a family of Indian Tamil origin.
The committee pointed to her early work defending Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid activists.
