Plans to recruit thousands of new police officers have been severely derailed, following the cancellation of a controversial multimillion-rand contract awarded to crime-accused Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala.
Acting Police Commissioner Puleng Dimpane told Member of Parliaments yesterday that SAPS was unable to select over 5,000 new recruits in 2025.
This major setback follows the termination of a medical assessments contract with Medicare24, a company linked to Matlala.
Dimpane says the SANDF is now conducting the medical screenings.
