Housing activists are calling on the City Cape Town to develop internal financial mechanisms to build social housing, rather than complain about budget cuts.
This is the response of Ndifuna Ukwazi, after the City submitted its report to the Constitutional Court, as part of a July order.
The court ordered that the city and Western Cape Government submit reports on how it plans to improve social housing in the inner city, after the court found it failed to have meaningful public participation in the proposed sale of the Tafelberg site in Sea Point.
In its report, the City claimed that decreasing national funding for housing severely limited local development efforts.
