Former Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya is back in court today, just twenty-four hours after resigning from the police service.
The former top cop returns to the Randburg Magistrate’s Court this morning as his formal bail application continues.
Sibiya faces multiple severe charges, including rape, human trafficking, and the sexual grooming of a minor.
Sibiya faces an additional charge of the negligent handling of a firearm.
He has remained in custody since his arrest last month at a strip club in Sandton, and maintains his innocence.
Sibiya resigned yesterday as internal disciplinary proceedings against him got underway. Police confirmed this in a statement:
“The SAPS confirms that Lieutenant General Sibiya’s employment with the Service has been terminated with immediate effect.”
Because of the pending misconduct hearing, police have classified his sudden exit as a dishonourable discharge.
PARLIAMENT URGES FOR ACCOUNTABILITY
Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police, has called on authorities to investigate any alleged criminal conduct involving Sibiya – and pursue charges where necessary.
Committee chairperson, Ian Cameron, says Sibiya’s departure from the service must not shield him from accountability.
