SANTACO in the Western Cape is expected to meet with City of Cape Town officials this morning amid escalating taxi violence across the metro.

The meeting is reportedly taking place in Century City.

SANTACO spokesperson Makhosandile Tumana says the organisation is calling for an end to the violence, which has claimed at least 7 lives in recent weeks, and left many injured.

The violence is alleged to be linked to a longstanding dispute between taxi associations CATA and CODETA – who are both under the apex taxi council, SANTACO.

Tumana told Heart FM News that the latest incidents are shocking, despite a peace agreement signed in Somerset West in August….

He adds that the motive behind the latest shootings involving operators from the CATA Langa district remains unclear.

He says disputes between individual drivers are sometimes labelled as taxi violence, but has urged all parties to resolve their differences peacefully.

ANOTHER SHOOTING ON THE R300

This morning, the City of Cape Town reported that a shooting occurred on the R300 – resulting in a temporary road closure to allow emergency teams to tend to the scene.

Our enforcement services remain on high alert, ready to assist the South African Police Service where needed.

We have also ramped up patrols around public transport interchanges.

The City is aware of continued misinformation and fake news doing the rounds, pertaining to tensions in the public transport sector including reports of a strike.

Meanwhile, the South African Police Service , along with the City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Directorate, are expected to hold a media briefing regarding the violence in Green Point.
