Cape Town Mayco member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says he won’t be distracted by internal party politics ahead of the local government elections.
In a post on his Facebook page, Smith was responding to a News24 report about his intention to stand for Deputy Mayor.
He describes the article as internal politics dressed up as news, but says he accepts that this comes with being a public representative.
Smith says his focus remains on his role as campaign manager and regional chair, with a crucial election just around the corner.
He says Cape Town is an example of how a city can function and flourish, giving other municipalities hope.
Smith has also urged party structures to stay focused during the final week and a half of campaigning.
He says the party is ready to protect what he calls a Cape Town that works for all, and to prevent what he describes as a chaotic coalition.
